The popularity of the small dog means a lot of people are thinking, “Why don’t I get a smart little dog like that.”

But breeders, the Humane Society and lovers of the breed urge caution.

Calgary Humane Society’s Christy Thompson says Jack Russells are the most common small dogs left at the shelter by frustrated owners.

“They are definitely not for everybody,” she said. “They are a very smart breed and they have a lot of energy.”

She’s seen surges of interest when Jack Russells pop up in Hollywood on TV or at the Oscars.

But she says the Humane Society never lets a would-be owner take a Jack Russell home without knowing what to expect.

Christine Camp is with the Alberta Russell Rescue Organization in Beiseker, northeast of Calgary.

She takes in 30 to 40 Jeff Russell‘s a year. She says many owners can’t handle the animals continuous demand for plenty of exercise and stimulation, and a bored dog will eat everything in its owner’s home.

“Their couch and their shoes and their cell phone — and pees all over the house,” said Camp.

In spite of their temperament, Camp loves the breed.

“They are absolutely wonderful, adorable little dogs if you know what you’re doing,” she said. “If you don’t, you’re in trouble.”

But now the trick-performing, life-saving Jack Russell is hanging up his dog collar, said his trainer, adding that the four-legged star has earned his right to a relaxed retirement after helping the silent-film to Oscars glory.

“He has always had the talent to do this and much more,” said Omar Van Muller, the nearly 10-year-old dog’s Colombian manager.

“Lots of the things he did weren’t in the script,” he told AFP. “But he did them because he knew how to, and the director used them in the movie,” he added.

Uggie has long been able to walk and perform tricks, but toiled in anonymity for most of his life before landing the plum role in “The Artist,” about a silent era movie star struggling to adapt to the “talkies.”

All that changed when he appeared in Cannes last year — and was awarded the Palm Dog, an informal canine version of the Palme d’Or, to go with the honors showered on the French-directed movie.

He joined the film’s stars on red carpets at festivals around Europe, and as Hollywood’s awards festival got underway repeated his tricks over the other side of the Atlantic.

Then last month he won a Golden Collar, a new Hollywood prize for four-legged performers — for his work last year in both “The Artist” and “Water for Elephants.”

Van Muller, of German extraction, said Uggie was more clever than many people expected.

For example, “the script called for him to play dead — but he dramatically walked backwards and then collapsed. Lots of the things the little dog did in the movie were Uggie’s own tricks,” he said.

But time is catching up with the cute star.

“The little fellow is getting older. That doesn’t mean he’s at death’s door, but he has worked his whole life, he’s given me so much and I think it’s important to retire him from all those hours of filming work.”

Uggie — who famously saves his master in “The Artist” from a burning building by running and getting a policeman — will do more “humanitarian” work to promote caring for pets, said Van Muller.

To that end he has become the furry new face of a Japanese video game, promoting Nintendogs+cats, a game for the hand-held Nintendo 3DS that allows users to feed, train and care for customizable pets.

Uggie attended Sunday’s Oscars ceremony, taking the stage dressed in a black bow tie, in keeping with the posh Academy Award dress rules.

“The Artist” director Michel Hazanavicius included the cute co-star in his acceptance speech.

“I want to thank Uggie, the dog. I think he doesn’t care. I’m not sure he understands what I say,” Hazanavicius said, adding — in an apparent reference to Uggie’s linguistic skills — “He’s not that good, but thank you.”

Uggie, who has suffered from a neurological problem for some time, is now retiring.

But his trainer says he has had a full career. “To be in a film like ‘The Artist’ and to do everything that he’s done is sensational, it’s something very rare,” he said.

“Normally films that we make, for Disney, are for children, are funny but won’t be nominated for an Oscar,” he said.

The cute star of the black-and-white silent film, which won five Oscars on Sunday, has stolen the limelight for his performance.

But although the canine has captured the hearts of millions, his fellow terriers in Hampshire are not sharing the same level of public affection.

Staff at an animal rehoming centre in Southampton have revealed it takes in more Jack Russells than any other breed.

They make up nearly a sixth of all the dogs who arrive at the Blue Cross centre in Bubb Lane, West End.

It is believed the high number is down to their terrier temperament, the demands of which people do not always understand when they take on the dog.

The Blue Cross said Jack Russells were originally working dogs bred for fox-hunting, so need stimulation and exercise.

Not having enough to do can lead to behavioural problems, with the dog becoming destructive or showing signs of aggression.

However, they said that, with the right home, they can be rewarding pets.

In the past year, 52 of the 305 dogs which arrived at the centre were Jack Russells, while the animal charity saw 387 given up to its centres nationwide in 2011 – more than any other breed.

While Uggie may have hung up his collar and retired from acting, the Blue Cross is hoping his fame will help the homeless Jack Russell terriers in its care find their own time to shine by taking centre stage in a new home.

Megan Baverstock, animal welfare assistant at the Southampton Blue Cross, said: “The Jack Russells in our care won’t be dreaming about red carpets and golden awards – just a warm blanket, a tasty treat and a loving home.

“These small dogs are bright, energetic and have big personalities. As highly intelligent and active dogs they need to keep very busy and have a job to do, which new owners can enjoy with them through lots of exercise and fun games to play.”

The name Jack Russell originates from the time the animal was first bred in England in 1795 by parson and hunting enthusiast Reverend John Russell from a small white-and-tan terrier called Trump.

From This is Local London – On February 21 at around 11.15am Sharon Jackson’s six-year-old Jack Russell, Candy, was attacked in Russell Park, Bexleyheath.

Her 78-year-old mum, Maude, had been walking the black and white pooch when the incident happened.

The Staffie was not on a lead and was running around the park while its owner was in the play area with her child.

Mrs Jackson, of Long Lane, ran to the scene after receiving a call from the dog’s owner following the attack.

The 50-year-old told News Shopper: “For a start the dog should have been on a lead. The lady should not have been in the swing park leaving the dog to run around the outside.

“You should always be in control of your dog. My mother was distraught, it frightened the life out of her.”

The mother-of-one says the owner was apologetic but she was more concerned about her pet.

She said: “I just wanted to get my dog to the vets because she was bleeding so severely. My mum was covered in blood and so was I.”

Candy suffered bite marks to her neck, shoulder and stomach and needed more than 25 stitches.

Mrs Jackson said: “I’m not bothered about the money because my dog is insured.

“I’m just worried somebody else is going to go over there and get attacked. Next time it could be a child.”

Bexley police are investigating the incident.

They might not be known as the acrobats of the animal kingdom but this is one friendly fox with a surprising spring in her step.

This vigorous vixen has left more agile animals hanging their heads in shame with her impressive moves.

And the adorable orphan, called Anuska, has learnt from the best, mimicking the movements of her canine chum – Sadie the Jack Russell.

Anuska, now eight months old, was rescued by art teacher and photographer, Brian Bevan.

Just days after being born her mother was hit by a car and Brian, from Bedfordshire, took the vulnerable cub into his home after she was found by a farmer along with nine other cubs.

Anuska immediately formed a strong with 10-year-old, called Sadie and now the pair can often be seen jumping around together – making for some unusual picture opportunities for Brian.

Brian originally started photographing wildlife when he inherited his first camera from his grandfather more than 50 years ago.

And the 61-year-old said the pair enjoyed playfighting and going out for walks together and loved competing for the ball.

He said: “It’s hardly surprising to see a dog jumping around but watching a fox do it is something else.

“Anuska loves playing catch, she could do it all day long and never get bored.

“She leaps for the ball but she also likes berries so she’ll happy jump to pick those off branches too.

“Just before she came to me she was looked after by the farmer who found her for a few days.

“He has Labradors so Anuska has been around dogs from day one. I suppose when you look at it like that her behaviour is hardly surprising.

“Her unusual talent has certainly provided me with some great photo opportunities over the months though.

“It’s just absolutely fascinating to watch.”

Accident-prone pup Bob needed emergency surgery in Bradford after wolfing down three rolls of ribbon in the days leading up to Christmas.

But now the three-year-old, who lost a limb in a previous mishap, can look forward to the New Year thanks to the efforts of vets at the PDSA PetAid Hospital in Lorne Street, Bradford.

They found red, gold and green ribbon inside the terrier’s stomach, which could have proved fatal if not removed.

Bob’s owner, Sandy Sharp, 45, of Horsforth, who adopted him in September 2010, explained how the Jack Russell got into trouble at her sister’s home.

“I suddenly realised I hadn’t seen him in a while so went to see what he was up to,” Mrs Sharp said.

“I found him hiding under a bed upstairs – surrounded by the remains of a box of Christmas ribbon.”

She called the PDSA out-of-hours service and the mischievous mutt had an X ray, followed by the operation where the three rolls of ribbon were discovered.

“I was so worried when PDSA told me they needed to operate on Bob, but I knew he was in safe hands,” Mrs Sharp, from Horsforth, said.

“It was such a relief when they called me a few hours later to tell me the surgery had been a success. Although I was shocked when they explained how much ribbon they’d removed.”

After the operation Bob spent a day recovering at the animal hospital before being allowed home with his owner. He had to return for check-ups but has made a full recovery.

Mrs Sharp said: “We’re so grateful for everything PDSA have done for us. Bob is very lively and accident prone, but I’m keeping a close eye on him now to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

The two-year-old Jack Russell cross has been lured home after four months on the run.

Owner Stacey Barnden, 25, and her family plan to spoil their Christmas miracle with a big bone after resigning themselves to never seeing her again.

Ms Barnden put up posters, scoured vets and shelters and placed newspaper advertisements after Lucy vanished from her Mt Evelyn home on August 27.

But when the weeks turned to months and there was still no sign of her beloved dog, she and her family began to lose hope.

The call that made their Christmas came on Saturday from a Boronia vet – about 9km from where Lucy disappeared – who had scanned Lucy’s microchip and discovered she was listed as missing.

“I didn’t really believe it at first, I didn’t want to get my hopes up because we’d had a lot of false alarms at first with the posters,” Ms Barnden said.

After wandering around for several weeks, a skinny Lucy was taken in by a couple who had been afraid to hand her into the pound for fear she would be put down.

But when they took her to the vet months later, her true owner was discovered.

“It’s fantastic, it is the best Christmas present ever,” Ms Barnden said.
